The Research Presentation

In a nutshell....

Weighting: SL 30% or HL 20%

The Research Presentation is an exciting project where you'll dive into the world of theatre, exploring traditional acting techniques from around the globe. You'll focus on performance conventions, like how to use your body and voice on stage, learning from actors worldwide. But it's not just about studying; you'll also grow as a performer, trying out these techniques yourself. It's a hands-on, action-packed way to learn about theatre and develop your own acting skills.

Formal requirements...

For the Research Presentation project, you will need to produce the following:

  • Each student must submit a video recording of their research presentation, which should not exceed 15 minutes.

  • A list of all sources cited and any additional resources used by the student during the presentation must be included.

*NB: For Bii the student MUST use a piece of published work (see the guide). This section is about how they experiment and rehearse to produce a final performance. We do not need to actually see this performance!

  1. Oral Presentation: You will present your research and findings orally. This presentation should include information from various sources, including quotes, images, and paraphrases of information from the source. You should practice presenting these pieces of information while attributing the sources.

  2. Physical Exploration: Your presentation should also include your own physical explorations and research. This means you'll be trying out different performance techniques yourself. It's a great way to learn and understand more about theatre.

  3. Documentation: You will need to document your research and explorations. This includes any academic research you've done, as well as notes, images, or videos from your physical explorations in your journal.

Structure it like this.....

A: The Unfamiliar Theatre Tradition

Ai. With specific reference to their research each student explains the unfamiliar theatre tradition they have chosen to explore.

Aii. With specific references to their research, each student explains the performance convention they have chosen to explore.

2.5 Mins

2.5 mins

B: Practical Exploration of the performance convention.

Bi. The student demonstrates their process of practical exploration of the performance convention, in order to develop an understanding of the performance convention through the body and/or voice?

Before continuing see notes above

Bii. Each student physically demonstrates how they have experimented with applying the performance convention to traditional performance material?

2.5 Mins

2.5 Mins

C: Reflection on learning

Ci. Each student explains how their practical exploration of the performance convention has contributed to their continuing development as a performer?

Cii. Each student student explains how their inquiry into the chosen theatre tradition has further developed their understanding of theatre in the world. (This would include a compare/contrast of another theatre tradition)

I would follow this process:

Inquiring

  1. Choose a theatre tradition from the provided list.

  2. Conduct primary and/or secondary research on the chosen tradition.

  3. Identify one performance convention from the tradition that you want to explore.

  4. Research the performance convention you have selected.

  5. Present your findings and record a video about your research.

Developing

  1. Select the performance aspect(s) you want to focus on (such as facial expressions, voice, gestures, body posture, movement, or object manipulation) to guide your practical exploration of the convention.

  2. Engage in practical exercises to understand the chosen performance convention through your body and/or voice.

  3. Examine how the performance convention is used in traditional performance material from the chosen tradition to guide your practical exploration.

  4. Demonstrate your experimentation with applying the performance convention to the chosen performance material. This is not a performance; it's an exploration.

  5. • Record a video of your work in this area.

Evaluating

  1. • Reflect on how your practical exploration of the performance convention has contributed to your development as a performer. • Reflect on the process you have followed and consider how your inquiry into the chosen theatre tradition has enhanced your understanding of theatre in the world.

  2. Present your reflections and record a video about your work in this area.
